Today in 1909
While white locomotive firemen on the Georgia Railroad strike, Blacks who are hired as replacements are whipped and stoned—not by the union men, but by white citizens outraged that Blacks are being hired over Whites. The Engineers union threatens to stop work because their members are being affected by the violence.

Drivers at Up To Date Laundry vote unanimously to join Local 355

A group of 27 delivery drivers employed by Up To Date Laundry in Baltimore, Maryland, unanimously voted on January 24, 2024, to join Teamsters Local 355 in a secret ballot vote supervised by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

Up To Date Laundry is one of the largest healthcare laundries on the East Coast, processing 70 million pounds of linen annually. They offer rental, customer-owned goods processing, and complete exchange cart programs for hospitals in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Jamon Conway, a driver with the company for 13 years, was pleased with the vote’s outcome. “We knew we were not getting a fair shake, so we reached out to the Teamsters for assistance,” Conway said, adding, “We all like our jobs, but we believe we have not received the respect from management that we deserve.”

Local 355 President Mark Garey was ecstatic with the election’s unanimous results. “I met drivers who worked 60-65 hours a week but never received a penny of overtime. That’s unconscionable in 2024. This vote is another recent win in a string of victories for Local 355, including groups at Ryder Transportation and US Foods.”

Based in Maryland, Local 355 represents nearly 6,000 men and women employed in the public and private sectors in Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware.
