Today in 1929
What came to be known as Black Tuesday, the historic stock market crash, hit the New York Stock Exchange as over 16 million shares were dumped, wiping out billions in value and launching the Great Depression—an economic catastrophe that ultimately led to mass unemployment, sweeping New Deal labor reforms, and the legal codification of collective bargaining.
