The New York Times declares the struggle for an eight-hour workday to be “un-American” and calls public demonstrations for the shorter hours “Labor disturbances brought about by foreigners.” Other publications declare that an eight-hour workday would bring about “loafing and gambling, rioting, debauchery and drunkenness.”

Public-Sector Job Quality, Public Services Are Under Threat

June 15, 2018 | PUBLIC SECTOR UNIONS | A new EPI report warns that the future wages and job quality of the nation’s 17.3 million teachers, firefighters, and other state and local government workers are under threat. According to authors Heidi Shierholz and Celine McNicholas, a U.S. Supreme Court decision favoring the plaintiffs in Janus v. AFSCME Council 31 would weaken these workers’ bargaining power and likely lead to disruptions in the critical services they provide. The report shows that unions are critical to worker wages: state and local government workers covered by a union contract earn between 10.7 and 13.6 percent more in hourly wages than their nonunion counterparts with the same levels of education and experience… Economic Policy Institute
